Đurić: Ghana is a true friend and ally in Africa
“This visit to Ghana has been deeply inspiring and concrete. We reaffirmed the historic friendship between our two nations and received clear and unequivocal support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia—something of immense importance to us,” Minister Đurić stated after his meeting with President John Dramani Mahama.
He emphasized that the high-level meetings reflect the mutual commitment to advancing bilateral relations. Minister Đurić conveyed to President Mahama the greetings of President Aleksandar Vučić, along with Serbia’s support for Ghana’s reform efforts aimed at boosting economic growth and employment. He noted the alignment of Serbia and Ghana when it comes to respecting international law and the principles of sovereignty.
“Ghana is one of the pillars of stability in West Africa. In a world full of challenges, countries that respect international law must cooperate and support one another in preserving peace and stability. Serbia and Ghana share these very values,” Đurić underlined.
He also pointed to Ghana’s economic potential, highlighting its role as the region’s leading exporter of gold and cocoa, and stressed that this market of thirty-four million people represents a gateway to the entire African continent. He reminded that Serbia is the only country in its region to have an embassy in Accra.
The Serbian Foreign Minister noted that the visit resulted in the signing of bilateral agreements in the fields of sports and culture. He highlighted the presence of Serbian coaches in Ghana and the increasing number of young, talented Ghanaian athletes in Serbia. On cultural cooperation, he recalled that the Government of Serbia has designated September 1 as the Day of the Non-Aligned Movement and announced that next year will mark the 65th anniversary of the Movement’s founding.
“We want Serbia to serve as a gateway for African culture in Europe. We are proud of our Museum of African Art, we mark Africa Day, and we take pride in the historic support we extended to African nations in their struggle for freedom. This legacy is still recognized today, and it is why we continue to enjoy support on the international stage, including on the issue of Kosovo and Metohija,” Đurić said.
He added that the majority of African countries have not recognized the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo and continue to firmly uphold the principles of international law.
In conclusion, Đurić expressed pride in representing Serbia in a country that respects Serbia’s culture, values, and national principles.
“Here, a Serb feels respected and acknowledged. These people know what it means to be trampled upon, what it means when others try to impose their will—and what it means to resist that. Serbia and Ghana share the same spirit of dignity, development, and the pursuit of freedom,” Minister Đurić stated.
During his stay in Accra, Minister Đurić held meetings with the President of Ghana, the Speaker of Parliament and members of the parliamentary friendship group, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and several other ministers. Special focus was placed on cooperation in the defence and military industry sectors, discussed at the Ministry of Defence.
He also visited the Accra International Conference Centre, constructed by Serbia’s “Energoprojekt,” and announced the possibility of new construction projects involving Serbian companies, including the potential building of a new convention center for the African Union.
The Serbian delegation visited the memorial center of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. Đurić noted the enduring respect in Ghana for former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and the legacy of cooperation within the Non-Aligned Movement.
At the invitation of President Mahama, Minister Đurić will also visit Ghana’s interior regions and tour major infrastructure projects worth over $10 billion aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and ocean encroachment. He expressed confidence that these initiatives also represent opportunities for the involvement of Serbian construction and engineering firms.
