Political relations
Although formal diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1990 in New York through the signing of a Joint Communiqué, contacts and cooperation between the two sides date back to Eswatini’s independence in 1968. Political relations are based on the tradition of cooperation established within the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
Relations between the two countries gained momentum in 2024, when political dialogue intensified at both high and highest levels. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Eswatini, Pholile Shakantu, visited the Republic of Serbia from 2 to 5 May 2024. During her stay in Serbia, the General Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini on the Establishment of a Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation was signed.
The wife of the President of the Republic of Serbia, Tamara Vučić, visited the Kingdom of Eswatini from 24 to 25 July 2024 as part of her African tour. In addition to meeting her host, Queen Mother Ntombi Tfwala, Tamara Vučić held separate talks with King Mswati III and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pholile Shakantu.
King Mswati III visited Serbia from 18 to 21 October 2024, during which six Memoranda of Understanding were signed.
