Political relations
Historically, the relations are characterized by the alliance in the two world wars, as well as the relatively close cooperation in the Cold War period. After the deterioration of relations during the disintegration of the SFRY and the severance of diplomatic relations due to the NATO bombing in 1999, relations were renewed on 17 November 2000 at the ambassadorial level. Bilateral relations today are improved and significantly better than in previous years.
Today, the United States is one of the most important foreign policy partners of the Republic of Serbia, as reflected in the launch of the Strategic Dialogue in Washington, D.C., on 17 July 2026. The first session of the Strategic Dialogue was led by the foreign ministers of the two countries, Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The Strategic Dialogue represents a key platform for advancing bilateral relations across a wide range of areas, from politics and security to energy, trade and investment, military and security cooperation, culture, and people-to-people ties.
On this occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the United States on the Fulbright Academic Exchange Programme, and a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the United States on Energy Infrastructure and Regional Energy Security, were signed. In addition, the Republic of Serbia joined the Artemis Accords, which establish principles for cooperation in the civil exploration and use of the Moon, Mars, comets and asteroids for peaceful purposes.
Regular political dialogue has been maintained in the preceding period, with a significant number of meetings held between officials of the Republic of Serbia and representatives of the U.S. administration and members of the United States Congress.
The most recent official visit to Washington, D.C., by Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić took place on 6 August 2025, when he met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
President Aleksandar Vučić paid a visit to Washington from February 29th to March 3rd and from September 2nd to 5th 2020. On both occasions, President of the Republic of Serbia met with the highest American officials.
A formal reception at the Congress, on the occasion of marking the 100th anniversary of the raising of the Serbian flag at the White House, was held on 25 July 2018 in Washington. The reception was attended by Prime Minister Ana Brnabić and the former First Vice President of the Government and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dačić.
The former Vice President of the USA Joseph Biden visited Belgrade in August 2016.
In 2026, the two countries marked an important milestone, commemorating the 145th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Economic relations
Trade between Serbia and the United States totalled USD 1.6 billion in 2025, with Serbian exports amounting to USD 716.3 million and imports from the United States reaching USD 841 million.
Following the arrival of major companies such as Philip Morris, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Ball Packaging, a number of other U.S. companies have invested in Serbia’s manufacturing and services sectors in recent years. These include Cooper Tires, Cooper Standard, Johnson Controls, Sharps Terminator, NCR, Sitel, VelaTel Global Communications, AMETEK, Delphi Packard, Lear Corporation and others.
